Bespoke painted fretwork mirror wardrobe

This utterly extraordinary bespoke fitted wardrobe is one of the most visually dramatic and decoratively ambitious installations in contemporary British fitted furniture — a piece that transcends the boundaries of functional storage to become a genuine work of interior design art, commanding the bedroom it inhabits with the kind of bold, unapologetic confidence rarely seen in residential joinery.

The doors are the defining statement of the entire installation and an achievement of quite exceptional craftsmanship. Each full-height panel is constructed from spray-painted MDF in a deep, saturated navy blue — a colour of tremendous richness and depth that shifts between indigo and midnight depending on the quality and angle of light in the room. Across the face of every door, an intricate fretwork lattice of hand-crafted MDF strapping is applied in a repeating diamond and cross pattern — fine, precisely mitred sections of painted timber assembled into an elaborate geometric network that covers every centimetre of the door face. Behind this fretwork, mirror glass is set flush, creating a surface of astonishing visual complexity where the deep blue geometry of the fretwork floats in front of a continuous reflective plane that doubles the room and multiplies the light in a thoroughly theatrical and glamorous way.

The fretwork pattern itself is particularly accomplished — a double-diamond cross motif with an almost Art Deco or Hollywood Regency quality that draws simultaneously on classical Georgian glazing bar traditions and the bold geometric decorative vocabulary of mid-century design. When all doors are closed, as seen in the second and fifth photographs, the effect is breathtaking — an entire wall of navy and mirror that reflects the floral bedlinen and the room beyond in a kaleidoscopic multiplicity of reflected planes and angles.

The hardware selected for this installation is of equally considered luxury — full-length cylindrical bar handles in clear acrylic with polished gold end caps and fixing brackets, their transparency allowing the deep navy of the door frames to read through them uninterrupted while the gold fittings add a warm, jewellery-like accent of considerable refinement.

The interior, revealed in the third photograph, is lined throughout in a warm pale grey laminated board — clean, calm, and deliberately understated as a counterpoint to the drama of the exterior — with shelving, hanging rails, and compartments all configured precisely to the client’s storage requirements. All doors operate on soft-close hinges, and all internal drawers run on soft-close runners, delivering a quality of movement entirely in keeping with the exceptional standard of this entirely bespoke installation.
